I am Legend
In this clip it starts off with a news story and then cuts
to New York in which some kind of event has happened and you see will smiths
character driving around with a rifle.
The genre of this film is clearly sci-fi but is also a
zombie film but there is no aspect of that in the clip the opening sequence is
good as you a large amount of establishing shots and this is what I will be
using in my film.
The mise-en-scene is important as there is a lot going on in
each shot. The key factors are: props, setting. The props are important as you
see a deserted city in which there is abandoned cars and a verity of other
things scattered about. This gives an aspect of realism and this could happened
in a blind panic and people a fleeing. There is also the rifle is key prop as
you don’t know why he needs a gun as there is no kind of enemy in the area. This
makes the audience wonder why he is doing so and questions that. This will also
make the audience seem at the edge of their seats as they don’t know when the
first one will appear.
The setting is also very important as from the surroundings
you know something bad has happened as everything looks wreaked and broken down
and overgrown. This effect suggests the events that caused this must have
happened a while ago as it looks like the city was long a deserted. This makes
the audience feel a sense of realism as it you can see a time scale of how long
it takes for things to turn bad and that it doesn’t take much.
The camera angles are mostly establishing shots the ruins of
New York. This establishes the scene and makes the audience feel like this
could happen anywhere at any point. There are some close ups of Will Smiths
character who looks like he is concentrating or looking for something. This
adds suspense to the audience as they want to see what he looking out for.
The film stock for this film is 35mm this is important as it
makes it look high quality and detailed. This is important for a film like this
as the details of the city could hold key items for the audience to see. The
lighting is a high key lighting it is meant to look like natural lighting it
looks overly light which could have conations of something bad happening when
it isn’t lit up. This could also signify that it if there is some kind toxin in
the air that has somehow caused this.
So therefore although it isn’t the same genre the film
techniques used have gave me ideas on how i should film.
